Biography of Heinrich Auspitz

Heinrich Auspitz was a student of Ernst Wilhelm Ritter von Brücke (1819-1892), Karl Freiherr von Rokitansky (1804-1878), Josef Skoda (1805-1881), Johann Ritter von Oppolzer (1808-1871), and Ferdinand Ritter von Hebra (1816-1880). From 1863 he worked as Privatdozent of dermatology and syphilis, from 1875 extraordinary professor of these disciplines at the University of Vienna, where he was director of the general policlinic from 1872.

In 1884, upon the death of Hermann Edler von Zeissl (1817-1884), his long-time wish of becoming chief of a clinical station was fulfilled, but he died of a heart condition two years later, at the age of only fifty years. He was one of the most prominent dermato-syphilologists of the late 19th century.

From 1869 Auspitz edited and published the quarterly journal Vierteljahresschrift für Dermatologie und Syphilis (Wien).
